Additional Notes Views of Arosbay, Bantam, Gammalamma

In the John Overton map, A new plaine and exact map of Asia, images [624] dated 1666 and [587] dated 1671, there are three city views that do not figure in other maps.???? Arosbay, Bantan, and Gamalama. At the beginning of the 17th century the movement of information  was steadily increasing.

In 1592 the cartographer Petrus Plancius with  access to Portuguse nautical charts from the Spanish Bartolomeo de Lasso published charts detailing the route to the Indies. Cornelis de Houtmanwas was sent to Portugal to check these charts and obtain more information. This together with the information from Jan Huyghen van Linschoten returning from Goa enabled the First Dutch Expedition to Indonesia in 1595/97, followed quickly by a second in 1598 led by Admiral Jacob van Neck together with Vice-Admiral Wybrand van Warwyck and Jacob van Heemskerck. Van Neck returned in 1599 and published his account in 1601 with an English edition in the same year and a French edition in 1609.

Bird's eye view of the battle near Aros Bay on Madura. The second voyage to Indonesia, led by Jacob van Neck and Wijbrant van Warwijck, was reasonably successful. The fleet set sail in May 1598 and arrived in Bantam towards the end of that same year. In Bantam the fleet split: four vessels sailed on to the Moluccas. These were lead by Wijbrant van Warwijck and Jacob van Heemskerck. After a visit to the city of Tuban on Java, they sailed to the island of Madura. Here the Dutch came into conflict with the local population.
